Ivan Kral – Musician, Songwriter, Filmmaker and David Bowie Collaborator

Ivan Král was a Czech-American guitarist, bassist, songwriter, producer and filmmaker whose career connected some of the most influential figures of 1970s and 1980s rock music. Best known for his work with the Patti Smith Group and Iggy Pop, he also collaborated with David Bowie, contributed to songs later recorded by Bowie, worked alongside Mick Ronson and documented New York’s emerging punk scene through his films.

Although Král rarely sought the spotlight himself, his influence reached far beyond the bands in which he performed. As co-writer of Dancing Barefoot and Bang Bang, producer of numerous international recordings and creator of the acclaimed documentary The Blank Generation, he became one of the most versatile musicians to emerge from New York’s underground music scene.

Within David Bowie’s career, Král is best remembered through his close association with Iggy Pop during the Berlin period, his friendship with Bowie, the song Bang Bang, which Bowie later recorded for Never Let Me Down (1987), and his personal recollections of time spent with Bowie in Berlin. His career also intersected with former Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson through several proposed collaborative projects that, although never completed, reflected the close musical circles in which Král worked throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.
