The Buzz – David Bowie’s 1966 Backing Band
Photo: Unknown photographer / David Bowie World collection / editorial use
The Buzz were David Bowie’s short-lived backing band during 1966, formed after the end of his association with The Lower Third. This period belongs mainly to Bowie’s Pye Records phase, when he was still working within the mod, beat and rhythm-and-blues influenced London club scene.
Although The Buzz did not last long and never became famous in their own right, they are historically important because they mark one of Bowie’s final attempts to work within a conventional backing-band format before moving toward the more theatrical, narrative and character-based songwriting of his Deram period.
- Associated name: David Bowie & The Buzz
- Main period: 1966
- Context: Pye Records period / post-Lower Third backing band
- Key singles: “Do Anything You Say”, “I Dig Everything”
- Transition: From mod-pop and beat music toward the Deram era
The Buzz in Bowie’s timeline
The Buzz occupy a short but important place in David Bowie’s early career. Following the breakup of The Lower Third, Bowie continued to search for a musical setting that could support his ambitions as both a performer and songwriter.
In 1966, he was still moving between identities: part mod singer, part beat-group frontman, part emerging solo songwriter. The Buzz belong precisely to this uncertain but creatively active period.
Formation after The Lower Third
After parting ways with The Lower Third, Bowie and his manager Ralph Horton began assembling a new backing group. Auditions were held in early February 1966, and the resulting band became known as The Buzz.
The group made its live debut on 10 February 1966 at the Mecca Ballroom in Leicester. Within days, Bowie and The Buzz were appearing at important London venues such as the Marquee Club.
Known line-up
As with many of Bowie’s early groups, line-ups could shift and documentation is not always perfectly consistent. The best-known Buzz configuration includes:
- David Bowie – vocals
- John “Hutch” Hutchinson – guitar
- Derek “Dek” Fearnley – bass guitar
- Derek “Chow” Boyes – keyboards
- John “Ego” Eager – drums
Hutchinson is especially important because he would later re-enter Bowie’s story in a different musical setting, including the Feathers period with Bowie and Hermione Farthingale.
The Pye Records period
The Buzz period coincided with Bowie’s brief time recording for Pye Records. During this phase he released “Do Anything You Say” backed with “Good Morning Girl”, followed later by “I Dig Everything” backed with “I’m Not Losing Sleep”.
These records were not commercial successes, but they are valuable because they show Bowie trying to push beyond straightforward beat-pop conventions. Even when the arrangements remained rooted in mid-1960s pop, Bowie’s writing was beginning to move toward sharper observation and a more distinctive voice.

Ready Steady Go! and television exposure
One of the most notable moments of the Buzz period came with Bowie’s appearance on Ready Steady Go! in March 1966, performing “Can’t Help Thinking About Me”. The performance connected Bowie’s earlier Lower Third single with the new live band environment surrounding The Buzz.
Television appearances like this were crucial for young artists in the 1960s. Even when commercial success did not follow, they gave Bowie experience in presenting himself visually as well as musically.
Live performances and the Marquee Club
Throughout 1966, Bowie and The Buzz performed regularly on the London club circuit and beyond. The Marquee Club was especially important, with repeated appearances and residencies helping Bowie maintain visibility during a difficult period.
These shows allowed Bowie to sharpen his stage presence and test material in front of live audiences. At this stage he was still far from the fully developed theatrical performer of the Ziggy Stardust years, but the foundations of that confidence were being built night by night.
From The Buzz to Deram
By late 1966, Bowie began moving away from a regular backing-band structure. His signing to Deram Records marked a major stylistic shift. The songs recorded for his 1967 debut album moved increasingly toward narrative pop, music-hall influence, character sketches and unusual arrangements.
In that sense, The Buzz represent a bridge between Bowie’s earlier R&B/mod phase and the stranger, more theatrical songwriting that appeared on songs such as “Love You Till Tuesday”, “Little Bombardier”, “Silly Boy Blue” and “When I Live My Dream”.
BBC clarification
It is important to separate The Buzz period from Bowie’s later BBC radio sessions. The Buzz were primarily a 1966 live and recording backing band. Bowie’s documented BBC Top Gear session recorded on 18 December 1967 belongs to his solo Deram period rather than to The Buzz as a functioning band.
That 1967 BBC session included performances of “Love You Till Tuesday”, “When I Live My Dream”, “Little Bombardier” and “Silly Boy Blue”. It was recorded for BBC Radio 1 and broadcast later in December 1967.
Historical importance
The Buzz are historically important not because they produced a major hit, but because they show Bowie at a decisive turning point. He was still trying to work within the structures of the mid-1960s pop industry, yet his imagination was already moving elsewhere.
The band’s short life reflects the instability of Bowie’s early career, but also his refusal to stand still. Each failed single, each club performance and each changing line-up pushed him closer to the artist he would become.
Clarification
The Buzz associated with David Bowie should not be confused with other groups using the same or similar names during the 1960s. In Bowie history, the name refers specifically to the backing group active around him during 1966, after The Lower Third and before his full move into the Deram solo period.
The Pye singles period
During the Buzz era, Bowie released several important singles on the Pye label, including “Do Anything You Say” backed with “Good Morning Girl” in April 1966, and “I Dig Everything” backed with “I’m Not Losing Sleep” in August 1966.
Both singles were produced by Tony Hatch and credited to David Bowie rather than to The Buzz as a separate band. Historically, however, they belong to the same creative period in which The Buzz served as Bowie’s principal live backing group.
The singles were not commercial successes, but they document Bowie’s move away from straightforward mod-pop and beat influences toward the sharper, more individual songwriting that would soon emerge during the Deram years.
