On 24 June 1978, David Bowie brought his acclaimed Isolar II Tour to Bingley Hall in Stafford. The concert marked the first of three consecutive performances at the venue, followed by additional shows on 25 and 26 June. These appearances would remain Bowie's only concerts ever played in Stafford.

The Isolar II Tour had begun nearly three months earlier in San Diego on 29 March 1978, and by the time Bowie arrived in Stafford, the tour was already well underway. The opening night at Bingley Hall represented the 60th performance of the extensive world tour.

Bowie was supported by an outstanding group of musicians. Carlos Alomar and Adrian Belew handled guitar duties, while Simon House added distinctive textures on electric violin. Sean Mayes played piano, Roger Powell performed on keyboards and synthesizers, George Murray was on bass, and Dennis Davis provided the driving rhythm on drums.

Although often associated with Birmingham, Bingley Hall was actually located closer to Stafford, surrounded by the countryside of Staffordshire. The vast building was better known for agricultural events and livestock exhibitions than for rock concerts, making it a unique setting for one of the most ambitious tours of the era.

Fans began arriving long before showtime. Thousands of concertgoers formed lengthy queues that stretched from the car parks around the grounds and along the perimeter of the venue. Despite a cloudy summer evening, the weather remained dry, allowing the crowd to wait comfortably for the doors to open.

The Stafford performances were remembered as some of the most enjoyable dates of the UK leg of the tour. Bowie appeared relaxed and energised on stage, and the atmosphere inside the hall was electric throughout the three-night run. For members of the touring party, the stay in Stafford also provided a rare opportunity to spend time away from the constant movement of life on the road, offering a brief moment of normality amid the demanding schedule of the Isolar II Tour.
